I love medical imaging. A rare viewing of an ecosystem uniquely mine. A tangible representation of my inner workings protected by law for me to do with as I please. These same images that display inner workings that contribute to my external experience and identity have been bastardized and held hostage by the medical community, used to diminish my experience and turn me into a case number rather than an individual with a voice to be heard.
In my practice as a multidisciplinary artist I recreate my documentation on my own terms. I use my entire body in the creation of my pieces and experiment with different materials and methods with a vision. The vision is never realized in exactly the way I set out to accomplish it and I accept the mutations and mistakes. I work around the unexpected and face challenges in my work just as I do in life.
The medical imaging I use as a reference for my work is hard and fast evidence of my experience. It’s proof that every part of what I went through and continue to go through is valid. It is just one part of a vast collection of documentation in the realm of women’s health that should be better understood and treated by the medical community. Because there is such a lack of knowledge about women’s health issues, we become our own doctors. It was only by advocating for myself that I figured out what was happening and how to continue on with my life in spite of it.
